‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from injury table to scoring with the Basque club
Thehe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta featured in English soil, an teenage representing the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in September 2015, he found the net. During his subsequent match he played in England, against the English side weeks after, he scored. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, sure enough, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he scored again. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I performed well. They kept me out of the second half: I was without a signed my contract, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the typical thing. I have no idea if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; following that, the short journey to Loiu airport and another flight to the UK, this time to play Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the team, partially owing to the demands of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary surrounded by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he says.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to make the first team and that proved true. Born to the one-time rival player his father and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he went through a torn cruciate, being released, a drop in category and a call back before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of their lives.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but each step you go through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his first game and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then go home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Strength training. With hip imbalance, address that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved upset in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone in your position, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. To then win the Copa del Rey, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. From top scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
