He has asserted his clean record regarding the allegations

Previous FBI chief James the former director has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a congressional proceeding.

The former director's legal representative submitted the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer declared he would try to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple reasons including that his client, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was formally accused soon after Donald Trump pushed his top legal official to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative informed the judge they aimed to submit several petitions to throw out the proceedings before a trial, arguing the government's case was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully assigned to handle the case.

Mr Comey's legal matter was initially overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from Trump after his investigation into a different political adversary - the New York official - failed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his partner, his wife and offspring Maureen, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the court state his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he comprehended the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.

Background Context

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about several months into the former president's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Russia and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey sparked a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Clinton were not pursued, leading to criticism from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys claim James Comey lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he misled the Senate by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the agency to disclose to news outlets data about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, block and delay" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

Via social media the former director posted to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was wrongly accused and accused Donald Trump of acting like a "autocrat".

"We have understood for a long time that there are costs to opposing the former president," he said. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "So let's have a court case."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump posted on social media demanding his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
