The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World
The seasonal game drop for Minecraft has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament added to the game since the mace made its debut. The lance is now available and it could very well alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mounts of Mayhem update also incorporates several new features and enhancements related to animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the development team had already known it was time for a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we wanted a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're curious whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your allies on horseback, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a primary use cases for the spear, and it's a blast," the developer says. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and inflict increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for knightly combat."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the wings and flying forth and making some real mayhem," she hints.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now real, and it needs to become an competitive event without delay.
Another key feature in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is inspired by the nautilus shells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for submarine exploration. Not only will it move you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your oxygen levels, so there's no need to come up for air for oxygen.
The rest of the additions are mostly things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.
"We've long considered this issue on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the ideal opportunity to also introduce something for underwater," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for sea mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."
She also adds that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you discover underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are refinements, including some long-overdue adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can ford bodies of water while riding a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it deserves.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
Overall, the year-end release of the year is a solid offering. The spear alone — and the pandemonium it invites — would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mounts of Mayhem update is available for all major editions of Minecraft.
