The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story

Throughout this cartoon adventure for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly gnome he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be entitled types, given to taking anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.

Of course, this scenario requires a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next favorite movie, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
